PacificSource Health Plans has chosen Dr. John Espinola as its next president and CEO, the nonprofit company announced Wednesday.

Espinola will join PacificSource April 3, succeeding Ken Provencher, who is retiring.

Espinola will depart Premera Blue Cross, where he served as executive vice president and chief strategy and product officer and as CEO of Kinwell Physician Network. Previously, he was national medical director of Essence Healthcare and executive director and medical director of Evercare, a branch of UnitedHealth Group.

Provencher will leave March 31 after nearly 30 years, including more than 20 as chief executive. During his tenure, membership grew by 200,000 to 600,000 policyholders in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, according to a June news release announcing his departure.
